The Voorhees Archaearium

The Nathalie P. and Alan M. Voorhees Archaearium reveals new insights about the history of Jamestown and how the colonists lived and died through exhibits and artifacts telling the story of the beginnings of English-speaking America through archaeology.
Over a thousand objects last handled by Jamestown colonists in the early 1600s including arms and armor, personal objects, ceramics, tools and trade items, unearthed by archaeologists at the James Fort site, are on exhibit. Intimate galleries invite close inspection of the artifacts. The results of forensic research on the remains believed to be those of Capt. Bartholomew Gosnold, a founding father of Jamestown, and the analysis of over 70 other burials are included in the exhibits. Interactive virtual viewers overlooking the fort site transport visitors back to the early 1600s and show them what the fort looked like during the early years of the settlement.

A visit to the Voorhees Archaearium may be included in pre-booked student group tours led by Historic Jamestowne staff. All groups not escorted through the Voorhees Archaearium by site staff are considered unscheduled groups. Student group tours must be scheduled a minimum of 30 days in advance by calling 757-229-0412.

For groups not having a pre-booked program, certain restrictions apply.
